Job Description
The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is seeking a senior researcher to join a dynamic team working on peace, security and development policy in Africa. As a member of the African Peace and Security Governance programme in Addis Ababa, the senior researcher and editor will undertake research and policy engagements with regional economic communities (RECs) and the African Union (AU), and lead on producing the ISS’ monthly Peace and Security Council Report.
Overview of duties
Research:
- Conduct in-depth research on issues relating to Africa’s Peace and Security Architecture with a focus on regional and continental policy
- Analyse AU and Peace and Security Council (PSC) decisions and initiatives
- Monitor the latest regional and continental developments on peace and security
- Contribute to articles, policy briefs and research reports
Lead PSC Report Editor:
- Coordinate and oversee production of the monthly PSC Report
- Provide editorial guidance and work with a team of researchers to produce timely, insightful, relevant and informative articles that adhere to quality standards
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders for input and feedback
Contribute to policy development support:
- Contribute to ISS’ efforts to enhance the decision-making capacity of regional and continental policy actors on peace and security matters
- Convene seminars, closed briefings and expert roundtables
- Network and engage with stakeholders to ensure uptake of policy recommendations
Overview of requirements:
- A Master’s degree or PhD in international relations, political science, African studies, journalism or relevant social science discipline
- Proven experience in conducting research on the AU, RECs or related topics
- Exceptional English writing and editing skills; French proficiency is an advantage
- Experience in coordinating and managing publication processes is an advantage
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Knowledge of African political dynamics, and regional and continental issues
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
