Background

IOM Ethiopia’s Emergency and Post Crisis unit responds to humanitarian needs throughout the country. After the onset of conflict in Tigray region of Ethiopia in November 2020 the team extended its operations to respond to this crisis, based out of Mekelle and Shire. IOM’s activities aim to target the most vulnerable IDPs and also to support the recovery of critical infrastructure.

Under the general supervision of the Shelter/WASH Officer and direct supervision of the Shelter/WASH Assistant, the candidate will be responsible and accountable for the following:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. With regular field visit, support and monitor the implementation of Shelter/NFI & WASH activities for IOM Ethiopia
  2. Contribute in identify relevant IDPs/ returnees sites that needs Shelter/NFI & WASH assistance and support in assessing when requested.
  3. Support in doing independent identifications and verifications to affected population prior distribution
  4. Ensure smooth coordination and communications with relevant IOM sectors.
  5. Support in co-ordination with the National Officer (WASH), Coordinate with respective Warehouse Assistants responsible for stock records of materials in office stores to monitor proper utilization of materials.
  6. Regularly update the supervisors on the progress and issues of the Shelter/NFI & WASH project.
  7. Contribute to the preparation of written briefings, situation reports and ensure timely delivery of weekly and monthly reports.
  8. Support in carryout all field WASH activities, including technical and hygiene promotions activities on ground as directed by the WASH Officer.
  9. Perform other duties as requested by the manager.

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification

·         Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in engineering, public health, or any related technical field

Experience Required

  • 2 years of relevant professional work experience with 1st Degree and 4 years of relevant professional work experience with Diploma
  • Experience in shelter program interventions
  • Strong writing and reporting skills,
  • Familiarity in working with International Organizations, UN agencies or diplomatic missions is an asset,
  • Very good understanding of humanitarian principles
  • Good computer knowledge in MS office packages.

·         Ability to build relations with local government authorities, civil society, beneficiaries and other stakeholders.

 

Languages

·         Thorough knowledge of spoken and written English and Tigrigna

·         Knowledge of other languages spoken in Ethiopia specifically Amharic is advantageous.

In all cases, a prerequisite for taking up the position is legal residency in the country of the duty station, or in the neighbouring country located within commuting distance, and work permit, as applicable.
