Mekdim Ethiopia National Association (MENA) is an indigenous national non-governmental, non-political and not for profit humanitarian organization working in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment and support services for the past 30 years throughout the country.
Accordingly, MENA is now in process of recruiting employees for its Global-Fund/GC7-HIV Prevention Project sub-granted from CCRDA aimed at “Expanding Access to Comprehensive HIV Prevention and Care Services for Key and Priority Populations in Selected High-Incidence Woredas/Towns” of South Ethiopia and Oromia Regional State Government; thus, the organization invites interested and competent candidates on the following vacant posts:
Job Description for Mentors of AGYW Mentors (Specific to HIV Prevention in Higher Learning Institutions)

- Job Purpose
The Mentor for AGYW Mentors will provide guidance and support to AGYW mentors, helping them develop their skills, communication abilities, and mentoring philosophy. Additionally, the mentor will work directly with AGYW alongside other mentors, providing direct mentorship and supporting the implementation of HIV prevention strategies. The goal is to ensure that AGYW mentors are well-equipped to provide high-quality mentorship while also directly influencing AGYW’s HIV prevention knowledge, sexual and reproductive health, and overall well-being.
- Key Responsibilities
1. Mentorship and Skill Development
- Provide regular mentorship to AGYW mentors, offering guidance on developing their communication skills, mentoring techniques, and personal mentoring philosophy.
- Assist AGYW mentors in reflecting on their own experiences, challenges, and growth, helping them gain confidence in their roles.
- Offer personalized feedback and support to help AGYW mentors refine their mentoring practices.
Direct Mentorship of AGYW
- Provide direct mentorship to AGYW, alongside other mentors, focusing on HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and empowerment.
- Guide AGYW in navigating challenges they face in higher learning institutions, including stigma, gender-based violence, and health issues.
- Lead group discussions, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and other activities aimed at supporting AGYW’s well-being and helping them make informed health decisions.
- Collaborate with AGYW mentors to ensure effective service delivery and mentorship for AGYW.
Training and Capacity Building
- Organize and facilitate training sessions for AGYW mentors on topics like effective communication, empathy, active listening, and mentorship ethics.
- Help AGYW mentors integrate HIV prevention knowledge, gender sensitivity, and adolescent health topics into their mentoring approaches.
- Encourage AGYW mentors to share best practices and learn from one another’s experiences.
Resource Connection and Networking
- Help AGYW mentors connect with resources, tools, and materials that enhance their mentoring practices (e.g., educational materials, digital tools).
- Foster connections between AGYW mentors and external resources or networks to improve their professional development.
- Promote peer learning and networking opportunities among AGYW mentors to create a supportive community.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Regularly assess the progress and performance of AGYW mentors through one-on-one sessions, group discussions, and feedback surveys.
- Provide regular reports to the Project Coordinator on the development of AGYW mentors and identify areas for improvement.
- Collect and share feedback from AGYW mentors to continuously refine training and support strategies.
Qualifications
1. Education
- Recent graduate or professional experience in relevant fields such as Public Health, Education, Social Work, Psychology, or related disciplines.
Experience
- Experience in mentoring, coaching, or training is essential.
- Familiarity with HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and issues faced by AGYW is advantageous.
- Prior experience working with or supporting peer educators or mentors is a plus.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of mentoring best practices, including effective communication, conflict resolution, and capacity-building techniques.
- Ability to foster a positive, non-judgmental, and supportive mentoring environment.
- Familiarity with digital tools, online resources, and educational apps to enhance mentoring effectiveness.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism while supporting AGYW mentors.

- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple mentoring relationships simultaneously.

- Based at the DIC or higher learning institutions, or other project locations, with regular meetings and outreach to AGYW mentors and AGYW.
- May involve work during evenings, weekends, or holidays to meet the needs of mentors and AGYW.
- Mentor Selection Process
1. Collaboration with AGYW Mentors
- Mentors of AGYW mentors will be selected based on their demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and guide others effectively.
- The selection process will include reviewing qualifications, past mentoring experience, and compatibility with the program’s goals.
Criteria for Selection
- Mentors must have experience in mentoring, coaching, or capacity building.
- Strong understanding of mentorship, HIV prevention, and AGYW needs is essential.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and foster a collaborative learning environment is a must.
- AGYW Living with HIV are encouraged to apply.
Selection Process
- Application Review: Candidates will submit applications, including a resume and cover letter outlining their mentoring experience and approach.
- Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed to assess their mentoring skills, communication abilities, and familiarity with AGYW issues.
