Job Description
Purpose of the Job:
Conduct research, advocacy and campaign to enhance the promotion and protection of Socio -economic rights in Ethiopia.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct awareness raising and campaigns on socio- economic rights to ensure adherence to national and international protection standards and guidelines;
- Conduct assessments for identification of needs to realize socio-economic rights;
- Contribute to the execution of legislative and policy initiatives regarding socio-economic rights;
- Communicate with a range of external stakeholders and advocacy targets including the Government and relevant authorities on the basis of identified gaps for the effective promotion and protection of socio-economic rights and to give them voice;
- Conduct or support the undertaking of research and analysis to formulate advocacy briefs and calls for the promotion and protection of the socio-economic rights;
- Conduct legal review in relation to socio economic rights to write advocacy and campaign messages and materials for amendment or enactment of laws that afford better protection to socio-economic as well as to ensure their compliance with constitutional, international and regional human rights standards;
- Organize advocacy and campaign events;
- Support the initiation of nationwide and regional movements to advocate and campaign for the promotion and protection of socio-economic, including the ratification and implementation of relevant international and regional human rights instruments;
- Conduct mapping of stakeholders that can contribute to the realization of socio- economic rights;
- Contribute to building capacity, knowledge, values and standards based on identified needs of both governmental and non-governmental national stakeholders on socio- economic rights;
- Conduct and follow up on advocacy initiatives to ensure implementation of recommendations, general comments and concluding observations of international and regional human rights bodies at the national level;
- Participate in discussion forums set in institutions and organizations, including by other national human right institutions for joint programming, sharing of experience and promising practices, regarding the promotion and protection of socio-economic rights in their policies and organizational operations;
- Keep the Director informed with regular detailed and accurate reports on progress and challenges in advocating and campaigning for the promotion and protection of socio -economic rights;
- Undertake other duties and tasks deemed necessary.
REPORT TO: Director, Socio-Economic Rights
DURATION: One year contract from the date of employment
SALARY RANGE: Gross monthly salary of ETB 19,157.00- ETB 22,817.00 plus ETB 6,000.00 Housing allowance and ETB 1,500.00 Transport allowance, depending on candidates qualification, experience and earning history
Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree (LL.B), Master’s Degree (MA/LLM) in Human Rights Law, International Law, Public law ;
- 4 years of relevant experience for LL.B and 2 years of relevant experience for MA/LL.M
- Computer Literate;
- Knowledge of Amharic and English is required; Knowledge of other local languages is advantageous.
