Organizational Profile 

MERSA Media Institute is a nonprofit media policy think tank. We work to help create vibrant, responsible and independent media institutions, professional unions and education centers through research, capacity building and institutional support in Ethiopia.

Position Summary:

The consultant will be working with the project team to come up with a module on media and information literacy, that the consultant will later be giving training and mentorship on. The project team together with the consultant will conduct a two days training on media and information literacy, and fact checking for 120 to 150 influential youths who are active on social media and text messaging services from four regions in Ethiopia namely Oromia, Amhara, SNNPR and Addis Ababa regions.

Twenty-four to fifty young participants, known as Information Integrity Ambassadors (IA) will then be competitively selected from the 120-150 trainees to participate in a 6 month mentorship program with the consultant. These participants will undergo more online training, consisting of technical and professional skills on media and information literacy . Furthermore, the consultant will engage in the production of public service announcements (PSA) and  white board animation MOOC videos to enhance local community awareness about media and information literacy and bring about behavior change.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare an Amharic written module addressing the key points in media and information literacy
  • Conduct two days’ workshops that will be held in the Oromia region, SNNPR region, Amhara region and Addis Ababa.
  • Conduct online training that will be held in 4-6 sessions for a maximum of 2 hours per session as a continued mentorship for the selected 24-50 Information Integrity Ambassadors (IA) to support their actions in fact-checking and dangerous speech mitigation.
  • Monitoring and evaluating IAs’ progress within the 6 months mentorship period.
  • Help in the production of  media and information literacy public service announcements (PSA), educational and advocacy audio messages to be distributed via community radio, targeting rural youth and population. In addition, help produce whiteboard animation MOOC video advocacy outputs (targeting urban youth online) aimed at enhancing their media and information literacy knowledge and skills designed to result in attitude and behavior change.

Required Qualifications:

The aim is to bring experts in the field of media and information literacy in order to jointly develop modules for practical training and mentorship. Mersa Media Institute is looking for two passionate Ethiopian experts with experience in media and information literacy,  journalism and communication. The engagement of the experts will span from May, 2023 to January, 2024.We would love to hear from you if you:

  • Are a media expert preferably with experience in media and information literacy
  • Have experience in providing tailor-made practical trainings
  • Have experience in preparing training modules in the field
  • Are experienced in mentoring  in the course of pitching ideas and story development
  • Have reliable internet connection for remote work during planning and trainings
  • Have a flexible training schedule and are able to work independently without constant supervision
  • Have good communication skills to maintain smooth and collaborative relationships with training participants, MMI staff, and project partners..
