The region has been suffering from violent clashes between various groups due to several issues which have resulted in displacement of over 270,000 people in the region. Moreover, as the region is bordering with Sudan and South Sudan, it has also been hosting refugees from these neighboring countries. As a result, today in addition to 270,000 IDPs, over 62,000 refugees are residing in the region.
The tension between the groups of population is especially high in the Metekel zone of BGR. The situation has worsened rapidly over the past months. The clashes between the population groups have been triggered by local disputes over land ownership and recurrent justice issues. Many of the IDPs have also moved to Chagni district of Awi zone in Amhara. Apart from designated IDP sites, many of the IDPs are living in the host communities by further deteriorating the capacity of the host communities to cope with the issues of shelter, health, water, sanitation and hygiene.
